The Ripple Rock Explosion was a significant event in British Columbia's history that occurred on April 5, 1958. Ripple Rock was a dangerous underwater mountain that had caused numerous shipwrecks in the Discovery Passage, making it a major hazard to marine navigation.
To eliminate this threat, the Canadian government commissioned a team to plant and detonate the world's largest non-nuclear explosive device. The successful explosion removed the top of Ripple Rock and made the passage safe for shipping, saving countless lives and contributing to the growth of the Canadian economy.
